I couldn’t get a good preview of the presentation to show up and I couldn’t really figure out the video loops. Maybe it was my computer, but it seemed buggy. It just wasn’t working very well on my laptop. A little motion is nice, but a fast moving loop can distract from the text.Īfter about an hour or so of playing around with OpenLP I decided to try OpenSong. I prefer something blurred or more textural with some simple color. I personally don’t like having a big picture of a cross or bible in clear focus behind the lyrics.

Many programmers even encourage you to distribute it (as long as you’re not charging a fee) and to make improvements. When software is Open Source, it means that it’s free and legal to download. I did some online searches for Open Source programs. I don’t have the luxury of working with any Mac’s so my experience is limited to PC’s.

I’ve heard people say that some of these are more PC friendly and others better for Mac. You pretty much want a dedicated computer in your AV area for it. I have the most experience with MediaShout, but it’s pricey and it takes up a lot of memory on a computer. I’m not sure that it’s available independently and I’ve never used it. Planning Center has an option for projections too, but it’s part of their subscription. I don’t myself own MediaShout, ProPresenter or EasyWorship which are the industry standards. It was a situation where there was about a day’s notice and there wasn’t much time to coordinate music so I needed to take care of planning and making sure that I had lyrics. A free option that might be worth giving a try is OpenSong.I recently had an opportunity to be a guest worship leader for an XLT (adoration service) at an area church. Yes, you can’t really beat MSPowerpoint, but of course that’s a heavy investment. Well, sometimes it’s just the devil you know. The only real answer to these outside of the MSOffice suite is the free Libreoffice. If you’re doing anything more than that, well, you should be using iTerm2 anyway. You’re not really going to notice autosave in Terminal if you only use it for the odd command. If you do any sort of coding, you’ll love Tincta. Love this free program, and you can find it in the app store. Main drawback: it’s not free (current price about $40). Note that the latest version does support autosave, but unlike native Apple apps, gives you the option to turn it off. Preview –> Graphic Converter (for images)

There’s two limitations: it’s pdf only, and it doesn’t have the ability to create hyperlinks. All the basic controls are familiar from Preview, including trackpad zooms and rotations. Skim is a great little free program that is based on Preview but adds some extra functionality, especially useful if you do a lot of annotations and note-taking.
Here’s a rundown of some of the main autosave-enabled apps and some possible non-autosave replacements. If autosave is slowing you down, there may be nothing else for it than to switch from your favourite Apple app to an alternative that doesn’t use the feature.
